Welcome to the project currently known as G-BARN

Welcome to our Great Bay Agricultural Resources Network.

This is a place for us to build our community's Great Barn!!!

We are here to build a structure that will shelter our community in bad weather and to be a tool and resource in our daily work of raising food and building a sustainble food system and vital community.   Please share your ideas, plans and resources.  If we can work on writting up drafts of a mission statement, this would be useful.  I have posted some of my thoughts on a couple of pages here, and I would love if someone with another view were able to take some of these ideas and carefully craft a few sentences that sum up our big mission.  I see needs for centralizing ag resources, inspiring and supporiting beginning farmers.  I see a need for greater connection with the resources that already exist through relationship building and a centralized calander and equipment resource sharing.  I see a need for matching farmers with land that needs farmers.  I also see a need for a service for coordination of workshops and learning opportunities, so that the teachers can worry about teaching and the details of putting on a workshop are the job of someone who is good at doing this.    I also can see the benefits if we are able to make the network that the farmers work in to be easily accessable by our customers to increase transparency and knowledge about how our local farmers are making decisions about how they raise crops, care for animals and care for the land.   What needs do you see, and how do you think we can meet these needs?

What are your initial thoughts about the potential for enhancing community and communication in this part of the state?  What do you see as the benefits?  What areas, in particular, would you like to see this group address?

Our working title for this project is intriguing.  GBARN or G-BARN... Great Bay Agricultural Resources Network.

An inclusive community of farmers, educators, government entities, business owners, local food organizations and customers working together to get idea of business plan marketing to faster the growth of agriculture in the region.

As we continue to meet, our goals will become more defined and we should probably craft some type of mission statement.  That would address issues of redundancy, geographical areas of interest, etc.

Everybody should fee free to edit what I've got here!  Just throwing some stuff up for us to mess around with.

Hi all,

Sorry I couldn't make the January meeting--I was writing an article for the Lee Conservation newsletter on local food and food safety and Laurel needed it ASAP.
Just as a heads-up, I will be adding a content listing to our UNH Cooperative Extension Ag Resources web page on community agriculture and want this to be the category where people can find everything from information and links to Ag Commissions to community gardens to CSAs. Any other ideas for this section of our web page?

Remember, by mission, we are supposed to be focused on university-based research. But we can hot-link to other sites and resources. This is a great concept and I am glad this is moving forward.

best, Juli Brussell
